Canopy Tours followed by a Volcanic Hills Winery tasting and platter

A unique (and exhilarating) way to experience native forest—from the treetops—Canopy Tours offers visitors a world-class ziplining adventure. Soar between platforms nestled within the lush canopy of the prestigious Mamaku forest as informative guides share fascinating insights about the ecosystem and conservation efforts that have helped restore the forest to its former glory. Ziplining combines thrills (one line stretches 200m long!) with breathtaking scenery, featuring close-ups of untouched native bush and the chance to spot native birds in their natural habitat.

Wind down with a unique wine tasting at the Volcanic Hills Winery. Situated at the top of the gondola, the views across Rotorua are virtually unparalleled, and the wide variety of wines offers something for everyone. A tasting can include up to five different wines, and when paired with one of their decadent cheese platters, it’s the perfect spot to relax after a thrilling day zipping through the forest.

Waikite Valley Hot Pools armed with Ciabatta picnic supplies

The general consensus is that all good days feature coffee and pastries, and if you remember your picnic basket, this day can be full of them! Start the day at Ciabatta, choosing a selection of croissants, turnovers, filled tarts and cronuts (there’s even mini-sized ones) to go, and don't pass by their deliciously fresh sandwiches (featuring delightfully fluffy ciabatta bread and an assortment of different fillings). It's the perfect place to stock up for a picnic.

Transport your basket of goodies to Waikite Valley Hot Pools for an afternoon of soaking in nature. Tucked away in a serene, geothermal valley just outside of town, this spot offers a range of natural hot pools filled with fresh, mineral-rich spring water straight from the Te Manaroa Spring, the largest source of 100% pure geothermal water in New Zealand. Whether you're after a private soak or a dip in one of the outdoor pools, Waikite is a soothing retreat. Plus, with walking tracks around the spring, it’s the ideal way to unwind and recharge.

Walk through Ōhinemutu Māori Village followed by Eat Streatt

Visiting Ōhinemutu Māori Village feels like stepping into a slice of Aotearoa New Zealand's cultural history. Right on the shore of the lake, this charming village features traditional Māori buildings with amazing carvings that tell stories of the past. As you wander around, check out the unique geothermal features that add to the atmosphere, like bubbling hot springs and steam vents. It’s a relaxed spot to learn about Māori culture while enjoying the stunning views of the lake.

Nearby, Rotorua’s Eat Streat is one of the liveliest spots in the city. Something of a hub for foodies, there is a huge range of dining options all under the cover of a shared canopy. Naturally, it’s pedestrian-only, and the energy of its patrons is infectious. Come evenings, fairy lights twinkle overhead and live music (from the boutique nightclub) fills the air. Whether you’re in the mood for gourmet burgers, fresh Italian or a visit to the iconic Lady Jane’s Ice Cream Parlour, there is something for every craving.

Whakarewarewa Māori Village followed by Eastwood Cafe

Offering a fascinating insight into living Māori culture is Whakarewarewa Māori Village. A vibrant Māori community dating back generations welcomes visitors to explore its rich heritage through guided tours (led by direct descendants) that showcase traditional customs, cooking methods and crafts. Learn how the geothermal activity was central to the Māori way of life, and admire the beautifully carved buildings set amongst the unique landscape.

A few minutes away, you'll find Eastwood Cafe, an inviting space that specialises in wood-fired pizza. Enjoy classic flavours, like the Caprese, and more adventurous options, such as the Porky-Pine, which combines smoked ham and pineapple, or the Notorious P.I.G., loaded with three meats and mozzarella. The indoor space is inviting, with its minimalist design and exposed wooden beams that reflect the forestry connection. On nice days, relax outside with direct views across to the Whakarewarewa Forest.

Bathing at Polynesian Spa followed by Ani's Gin Bar & Tapas

A blissful escape combining relaxation with stunning natural beauty, Polynesian Spa is situated on the lakefront and offers an outlook like no other. Standout dishes include crispy duck-fat potatoes, buttery cabbage alongside tender pork ribs, and mixed kaimoana cooked in garlic and white wine. At the bar, you’ll find an impressive selection of New Zealand spirits, including unique gin flavours like Feijoa & Pear and a vodka made from fermented sheep milk.
