Your Comprehensive Guide to Devonport

Devonport is a beautiful seaside suburb with sandy beaches and not one, but two, volcanic cones that are both well worth the climb. Takarunga/Mount Victoria is a short (but steep) 20-minute uphill walk that offers one of the city’s best views of Auckland’s skyline. Nearby, in addition to expansive views of Rangitoto Island and the city, Maungauika/North Head also offers something of a historical experience with bunkers, underground tunnels and gun emplacements to explore. 

After the climb, cool down by dipping your toes in the water along the sandy stretches of Cheltenham Beach. This spot is especially popular with families for picnics, walks and summer paddling (although, be wary of currents as the beach isn’t patrolled). Alternatively, if the timing is right, you can launch yourself off Stanley Bay wharf - a hit with the locals on a hot summer's day. 

Wandering in and around Victoria Road is definitely an activity in itself. There’s plenty of boutique shopping to be had along with a multitude of big beautiful villas to admire. From perfumes to candles, the studio space even offers workshops so that you can take home your own personalised fragrance. TOTI is an independent jewellery store offering unique pieces from around the world, along with other carefully chosen art pieces and homeware.

Indulge the taste buds at Devonport Chocolates, an artisan chocolatier where the magic happens on site. Whether it’s a treat for later or a gift for someone else, you’ll find it hard to leave empty handed. Those with a sweet tooth will be happy to hear that just down the road, Devonport Gelato is housed within the historic Vic Theatre. Grab a choc top, or branch out with flavours like cherries and cream, tiramisu and pistachio, before catching a movie or live show at what is the oldest theatre in the Southern Hemisphere. 

Another popular activity in Devonport is visiting the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum. Learn a thing or two about New Zealand’s naval past, as the museum tells the story of the role that the Navy has played in New Zealand's past and present. And as a bonus, it’s free. 

Start the day off with a coffee and brunch from the So French Cafe, offering all the French classics from the iconic Post Office building. Corellis Cafe is also something of an institution, a rustic and welcoming cafe with a classic (but expansive) all day menu.

For a sophisticated breakfast with beautiful coastal views, it's hard to go past Dulcie. And to throw another option in the mix, Lily Eatery is a trendy cafe space with a courtyard, serving eighthirty coffee and more of a contemporary brunch menu.

If it’s a sunny day, Vondel’s courtyard is the perfect spot to sit back with friends over some shared plates, and a glass of natural wine, craft beer or a small batch spirit cocktail. Once five o’clock rolls around, the iconic Esplanade Hotel becomes the local spot for after work drinks. The perfect place to cap off an evening in Devonport is a visit to the Vic Road Wine Bar and Cellar. A converted shoe shop, enjoy the extensive range of wine - whether that be now or taking one home for later.

If you’re up for something fancier for dinner, try Devon on the Wharf for beautiful views, food and a menu inspired by Mediterranean and Turkish cuisine. Also Mediterranean influenced, and another popular spot, is Vic Road Kitchen, which excels in locally sourced ingredients and fresh seasonal produce.
