Public Record on Ponsonby Road is a space that can really only be described as an archive of beautiful things. Part gallery and part store, they’ve carefully curated all sorts of art, jewellery, homewares, clothing and more, with a strong focus on pieces made with real skill from materials that last a lifetime.

As soon as you walk in, the space itself is worth pausing to appreciate. Beginning with a calm, dark and moody downstairs floor, followed by an almost-hidden and sun-drenched gallery space up above, overlooking the peaceful Western Park just over the road. You can wander in for a look, find a gift, chat with one of the friendly staff (who will happily tell you all about the works on display), or quietly spend some time with one of their exhibitions.

At the heart of it all is a clear appreciation for contemporary craft. The work they display sits outside trends and seasons, with artists and items chosen for their integrity and unique sensibility. Many of the pieces draw your attention to material and texture, from handmade ceramics and sculptural furniture to delicate textiles and unique jewellery pieces - all designed to weave their way into your collection seamlessly.

Alongside the store, they have a full programme of exhibitions, events and workshops throughout the year. One month might look like contemporary painting and sculpture, the next it’s a Kintsugi and Ikebana lesson, tea ceremony or live performance. It gives the space a real sense of connection to the community, without ever losing its quiet, considered mood.

There’s beauty in the objects, but also a thoughtful weight behind them: stories of material traditions, identity and cultural exchange. Visit for something special to take home, or simply to spend time inside one of Ponsonby’s most distinctive creative spaces.
