A trip to Mr T’s over in Onehunga might be one of Auckland's most comforting foodie experiences. This is the definition of soul food, where the treats on offer come straight from the hands and hearts of Mr and Mrs T themselves.

Hailing from Vietnam, it wasn’t an easy journey for the Tran’s to establish one of the city’s most beloved bakeries. Having fled their home as refugees in the 1970s, they eventually landed in New Zealand. The couple went on to share their heritage the only way they knew how—through food.

Here you’ll find humble takes on old Kiwi favourites, as well as Vietnamese-inspired bites. As is expected, the first sign you’re in for a good time is the scent of baked morsels and coffee brewing upon entry. Whether it’s an early-morning pick me up or a hearty lunchtime feed, Mr T’s has you well and truly covered.

Let’s start with the treats. Perfectly flaky croissants, indulgent pain au chocolat, seasonal fruit danishes and a rotating selection of flavoured eclairs. Other must-haves include matcha croissants, kumara sourdough, cream buns and flawless French baguettes. We’re drooling just thinking about it.

On the savoury side, these Vietnamese favourites are sure to steal your heart (and your stomach). The classic phở boasts an eight-hour broth bursting with flavour, while the Bánh mì thịt nướng is something plucked straight from a street cart in Ho Chi Minh City.

If you’re keen on a noodle dish, opt for the beef noodles, which star sliced lemongrass scotch beef, rice noodles, fresh veg and a chilli dressing. Meanwhile, the papaya salad is the hit of freshness you’ve been craving—think banana prawns, papaya (of course), an array of fresh herbs and the added crunch of peanuts.

TLDR; if you consider yourself a foodie, make tracks to Mr T’s stat.
