What started out as a pop-up restaurant at Karangahape Road’s Bar Magda in 2022 saw subsequent success for TALA, which has now permanently relocated to Parnell Road. A contemporary Samoan restaurant, TALA showcases tradition and heritage through a modern and innovative dining experience.
The translation of the Samoan word ‘tala’ is ‘story’ or ‘tale’. Everything about TALA is deliberate; it’s designed to tell a story. From the thoughtful fit out to the innovative menu, and the traditional apa fafano (hand-washing ceremony), TALA is designed to weave traditional aspects of Samoan life into a dining experience that is both immersive and interactive.
TALA’s head chef, Henry Onesemo, was raised in Samoa and his passion for food started young. Henry’s goal in his cooking is to capture the essence of his childhood memories, whilst simultaneously refining the dishes into an elevated plate of food. One particular favourite is the ‘raw ramen’, inspired by Henry’s youth, where eating crunchy, salty noodles with dehydrated vegetables was considered a beloved treat.
A memorable way to experience TALA is by opting for the ‘Chef’s Journey’, a multi-course dining experience complete with front row seats to the action. Of course, each dish is served with an accompanying explanation of its origin, often by Henry himself. The drinks list is designed to enhance the food, just ask the informed staff for their suggestions.
TALA’s sleek and stylish interior is centred around an umu, a traditional Samoan method of cooking - essentially an open fire. With the added benefit of ambience, the fire is used to cook a number of menu items including the restaurant's signature dish: the umu spatchcock chicken, prepared and cooked in front of guests.
No matter the occasion the journey at TALA is always a favourable one, and you can expect Samoan hospitality at its finest.
