Cromwell Heritage Precinct, 71 Melmore Terrace, Cromwell

Set inside the Cromwell Heritage Precinct’s Belfast Store, OCTA is a living gallery space that houses a world-class collection of original limited-edition prints by celebrated artists from New Zealand and all over the globe. While specialising in works on paper, a unique array of other art forms, including sculptures, ceramics and books, feature throughout.

Gail and Chris de Jong are the directors of the Gallery, who moved to Central Otago together in 2010 following successful, art-focused careers in secondary and tertiary education. Gail is an artist by trade and continues to paint stunning interpretations of the local landscape from her studio in Bannockburn, many of which can be viewed on the walls of OCTA. Chris, although retired from his days as a principal lecturer in printmaking at the Otago Arts School, is still known to host classes and workshops in the gallery for budding artists. In pride of place at the front corner of the room, you’ll spot Chris’s manual lithographic printing press which still gets to put good use.

But back to the collection! The directory of artists featured at OCTA is vast and impressive. On an international scale, you’ve got rare pieces by Matisse, Chagall, Braque and Calder mixed in with some of Aotearoa’s finest: Ralph Hotere, Marilynn Webb, Pat Hanly, Inge Doesburg, and many more. Chris and Gail warmly invite all art lovers, whether admirers or collectors, into the space, and are always generous with their extensive knowledge and experience.

OCTA is open all week long, and perfectly positioned for exploring the region’s magnificent surroundings. After your visit, sit by the lake and take in the views that have inspired generations of local artists, or pop next door to Pinot Junction for excellent coffee, famous baked goods, and a leisurely lunch.
