While they may be a little quiet about it, Teviot Valley is home to a community of some of New Zealand’s most talented artists. So, where does one go to marvel at these masterpieces? Forfar Road Gallery & Collectibles in Roxburgh, that’s where.

Originally from Dunedin, Janet Podham and Gordon Still had been holidaying in Roxburgh for several years before deciding to make their next visit a permanent one. After connecting with the local network of artists, the couple set about establishing a much-needed platform to showcase the plethora of work being produced in the valley. They transformed what used to be the town’s supermarket (and a blacksmith’s, way back) into a light and bright showroom for visitors to come face-to-face with Sheena Lassen’s landscape paintings, Marion Mewburn’s fun and quirky ceramics, the wooden sculptures of Murray Sheppard, modern jewellery crafted by Julia Fast and so much more from local talents as well as across Aotearoa.

The gallery combines Janet and Gordon’s passion for art with their love of mid-century furniture and collectibles, housing a very selective collection that they’ve accumulated over many trips up and down the length of the country. One of the first things you’ll notice when you walk in is the collection of whimsical hot air balloons suspended from the ceiling, quality, hand-crafted pieces that have been sourced from Authentic Models. The shelves are covered in racing cars, compasses, solar system mobiles, spy glasses, and other hard-to-find treasures that make unique gifts for others – or one’s self. A sleek display of mid-century chairs, tables, sofas and cabinets reside in the heart of the space, with a clean and minimalist aesthetic that can adapt and instantly add character to any room and style.

There really is no end to the gems found inside Forfar Road. From local art, jewellery and charming models to Crown Lynn and Temuka pottery, vintage prints, old-school sound systems, and mid-century homewares, we can’t think of a single person who wouldn’t get a kick out of exploring inside. Next time you’re in Roxburgh, look for the old enamel ‘Forfar Road’ street sign and shiny green Vespa out front (one of the most photographed attractions in town) and you’ll know you’re in the right place.
