Bomba on Lyttelton’s bustling London Street celebrates two of Italy’s greatest gifts to the culinary world… pizza and gelato. During opening hours there is a steady stream of customers and they travel from all over Christchurch to get their hands on a slice or scoop of Bomba’s best.

Owner Ed Monteschio first opened Bomba in 2019 and growing up in Italy’s Veneto region, in a family where food was a central part of their daily lives, it’s no surprise he has made a career out of serving incredible eats. With Bomba, Ed has created a place where regulars become fast friends and if he doesn’t know your name yet don’t worry he soon will - your order too. If you’re dining in, the covered courtyard complete with fairy lights and blankets is giving cosy vibes in spades. Along with brightly covered tables and hanging plant life all around, the space is warm and inviting, so even if you’re visiting for the first time you’ll feel right at home.

The gelato cabinet is what first grabs your attention when you walk up to Bomba with flavours like pistachio, dulce de leche and liquorice all vying for your attention. Next, the smell of pizza cooking in a woodfired oven mere metres away will soon become intoxicating and you’ll want to place your order ASAP! Pizza takes on many forms and flavours around the world and at Bomba the style on offer is Pizza Napoletana Contemporanea. The dough takes 48 hours to prepare, using a preferment called Biga and the hand stretching process takes a year and half to master, the end result = a pizza crust that is easier to digest and addictively delicious! Peruse the pizza menu while you sip on a glass of red, white or sparkling wine and contemplate which scoop (or scoops!) of gelato you’ll be ending your meal on.

There are no shortcuts taken in the kitchen at Bomba, from each pizza slice cut with scissors to ensure the dough isn’t ruined to the highest quality ingredients selected for each and every pizza. If you live in Lyttelton or visiting soon, make sure you factor in a stop at Bomba and prepare for it to become a regular occurrence.
