It can be a risky business making promises via a title – unless of course, you are a chocolate bar producer (Crunchie bars = never soft, Flakes = never solid) but in the case of Lyttelton’s Asian-inspired SUPER, the promise is well and truly followed through:
SUPER = super.
Housed in a stunning old building – in fact, the oldest standing building in Lyttelton – SUPER offers delicious food and drink with a focus on sustainability, flavour and fun. Owners Sahni Bennett and Joseph Quested opened in February 2018 and diners from near and far have been flocking ever since.
SUPER’s fare is simple, well thought out and delicious. The menu hosts a range of Asian-fusion style dishes perfect for devouring alone or with a group of friends at any time of the day. SUPER Brunch runs til 3:30 each day and boasts a range of exciting items like green tea and manuka smoked creamy mushrooms served with schichimi edamame puree on sourdough or hash. The bar menu offers nibbles and their ever popular bao buns of which the pork belly with hoisin, apple chutney and pickled cucumber are a favourite. For dinner start with a small plate (komono) like usugiri beef and finish with a large plate (omono) like the local fish served with burnt butter, kombu floss, sesame chilli pak choi and rice.
SUPER’s new refurbished wood bar features an enticing drinks menu involving sake, Japanese plum wine, cocktails, beer and wine. Much like the food, SUPER’s fit out is cool, casual and stylish without trying too hard to be any of those things.
And when it comes to their footprint on the earth, SUPER is treading very lightly. Reusable straws, organic and house-made ingredients, compostable packaging and a menu that swings more to the veggie side of things make SUPER a spot worth visiting for what is guaranteed to be, quite frankly, nothing short of a super time.
