Christchurch locals will need no introduction to Grizzly Baked Goods; first appearing on the scene at the Christchurch Farmers Market with their epic bagels in 2013 and since then they have been bringing all kinds of carb-goodness to Ōtautahi. The Grizzly empire now includes that original market stall and three brick-and-mortar locations, including their Cashel Street store.
For Sam and Sara, the owners, brains and heart behind Grizzly Baked Goods, it was a no-brainer to open their latest site. As long-time fans of the cafe that once inhabited the space, when the building was up for lease they took it as a sign and Grizzly Cashel Street came to be. Working with SemiCreative, a local spatial design studio on the fit-out, the interior is a dream background for all your pastry ‘grams and ‘toks. With a butter yellow wall, colourful Arnold Circus stools and wooden and tile accents all around, not to mention floor-to-ceiling windows that allow you to bask in the sun.
This pint-sized store packs a punch, with the cabinet overflowing with all your Grizzly favourites from donuts and pastries to sandos and cookies. Plus, the racks behind the counter are filled with sourdough loaves, buns, bagels and more. Here at the Cashel Street shop, you’ll also spy a couple of items in the cabinet that are unique to this location. There’s a buttermilk biscuit which can be served sweet or savoury depending on your preference and sweet pies available. Both are the brainchild of one of the Grizzly recipe developer’s who hails from Georgia, USA, bringing a slice of the American South to the ‘03.
The coffee machine brews an excellent cup of Embassy coffee and is at the ready to provide a much-needed caffeine boost to all who walk through the doors; from office workers to nearby hospital staff to tourists exploring the city. Grizzly Cashel Street is yet another feather in the cap for Sam, Sara and their team, and always worth a stop if you’re strolling by.
