Neighbourhood cafes bring charm, sustenance and perhaps most importantly, a place to gather — Poca Poca Cafe off Christchurch’s Cashmere Road fits this criteria to a tee. Located in a busy block of shops where Hoon Hay, Cracroft and Cashmere suburbs all meet, Poca Poca is warm, cosy and inviting.. Whether you’re stopping by for a leisurely brunch or simply to relax with a great cup of coffee, you’ll feel welcomed and right at home at here.

The inspiration for the interior design and concept of the space was drawn from the cafe’s name, which in Japanese means “warm and cosy”, in a similar vein to the Scandinavian concept of ‘hygge’. There is an emphasis on natural light in Poca Poca, with sunlight generously filling every corner. A minimalist colour palette allows the bright and colourful food dishes to shine, while there are pops of greenery dotted around the space, thanks to well-cared-for plant life.

Owners Herman and his wife Yoko first met while working in a cafe in Christchurch, they moved to Auckland where they gained further hospitality experience. They always dreamed of returning to the garden city — the place where their story began and to have their own cafe where they could share the flavours and dishes that have meaning to them. As Herman says, Poca Poca is a fulfilment of this dream.

Patrons of the cafe are the shared winners of this dream, as you will experience dishes unique to Poca Poca and most certainly go beyond stereotypical brunch fare. Signature dishes they pride themselves on include the Maze Udon - a uniquely spiced dish with a gentle kick and a creamy and flavourful smoked salmon omelette. There’s also a selection of pastries available, as well as coffee made from carefully selected locally roasted premium beans, so you are guaranteed a delicious cup every time.

Poca Poca cafe is just what every neighbourhood and suburb needs; it offers moments of relaxation and a beautiful space to meet with friends and family. Whether you live within walking distance or make the journey from the other side of Ōtautahi, you’ll become a regular in no time.
