In Sydenham, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find Mumma Bear’s retail space and production kitchen. This artisan breakfast and snack brand is all about the oats and celebrating their nutritional goodness. Started over a decade ago by original owners Rose and Tim, Mumma Bear has grown in popularity at the farmers market scene in Ōtautahi, plus through its retail and online platforms.
Bought in 2024 by Posh Porridge’s Olivia Burtt, Mumma Bear is going from strength to strength with their ‘food as it should be’ philosophy. The Sydenham kitchen and store is a bright, light and airy space with a view right into the heart of the kitchen. As soon as you walk through the front doors, the smell of their granolas, mueslis, and porridge blends baking away is quite intoxicating, and we challenge anyone to walk out of the store empty-handed.
Mumma Bear’s vision is all about showcasing beautiful ingredients and making tasty, filling and nutritious breakfast foods that don't bore you. They want to shake up the sometimes dull and repetitive nature of your morning routine with something that sparks a bit of joy. And what better way to spark some of that joy than with some of Mumma Bear’s favourites like the Berry Best Granola or mix it up with the Museli of the Month, where the flavours change regularly according to the team’s creativity. There’s the added bonus of the kitchen being wheat, rye and barley free as well as dairy-free, so a good option for those with allergies.
So the next time you’re lamenting your scrambled eggs or uninspired by your peanut butter on toast, take a trip into Mumma Bear’s Sydenham store. You’ll leave feeling excited for breakfast time and wanting to eat oats for every meal of the day, and that’s a-ok by us!
