Stepping into Sophie Divett Jewellery on Christchurch’s Colombo Street is like entering a jewellery store of a bygone era. Deep teal walls and ceilings, wooden cabinetry, vintage landscape paintings, and dried florals all add to the sense of cosy luxury within this special space. The fit out of the old cottage in the up-and-coming suburb of Sydenham has been designed by the two amiable women who run the show here: the jeweller herself, Sophie, and the store manager, Louise. Each detail of the space has been thoroughly thought through, yet feels completely natural with a sense of having lasted the test of time – just like the jewellery Sophie creates right here at her desk at the back of the store.

Once you’ve taken in the beautiful surroundings and given Ned, the store dog, a friendly pat or two, it’s time to begin the journey into the world of Sophie’s unique jewellery. Within beautiful cabinetry created from recycled Rimu by local makers Frontal Lobe, a selection of rings await admiring. Sophie draws inspiration from ancient jewellery along with New Zealand flora and fauna, and each unique ring feels a bit like an antique piece, complete with a name derived from Greek mythology.

Ethics are extremely important at Sophie Divett Jewellery, and reclaimed stones, recycled materials and transparent supply chains are used in creating each piece of jewellery. If you have a piece of jewellery that has been passed down but does not quite fit your style, Sophie can reuse old stones and turn them into something new to be enjoyed. There is also an option of creating custom rings, either through the build-your-own ring service, where you get to choose specifics from a number of options or if you are after a completely custom ring, that can be done as well.

While ceremonial bands are the focus here, Sophie also creates earrings, necklaces, bracelets and other jewellery. Everything is created to be unisex, and everyone is made to feel welcome within these walls. In Sophie and Louise’s words, they are in the business of making people happy – and what a lovely business to be in.

If you can’t make it to the physical store of Sophie Divett Jewellery, everything made here can be browsed and purchased online as well.
