Finding a top-notch cafe in an industrial area can sometimes be a tall order. Luckily for the businesses and workers in Christchurch’s busy Middleton area, Odds Coffee is here to answer all their coffee and food (and onsite parking!) prayers. And we’re not just talking any ol’ coffee and food, at Odds, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to gourmet savoury deli options, sweet treats and some of the most expertly made cups of coffee in the ‘03.

Opening in February 2025, the origin story of Odds is one of partnerships and friendships in the flourishing Christchurch hospitality scene. Co-owner Gina of Pebbles Boutique Patisserie fame is good friends with the team at Switch Espresso, and when she mentioned to them she wanted to open a cafe space, they just happened to have the perfect empty nook at the front of their roastery. With partner Minho, previously the barista at Child Sister, onboard, Odds Coffee was born, and this petite coffee shop packs a powerful punch.

With a small physical footprint, Gina and Minho were very intentional with the design of the space, both drawing on their previous work lives as a fashion journalist and media artist/engineer to complete the concept and fit out themselves. Bright royal blue counters and cabinetry immediately grab your attention, while the textured walls and seating have been created with Saveboard. This material is made with compressed recyclables, and at Odds, they have used ones made from old tetra packs, a nod to their efforts in sustainability. They also have a keep cup wall of beautiful ceramics, which customers are encouraged to utilise. There are further pops of colour with different artworks dotting the walls and magazines from Gina’s treasured collection available to peruse.

Once you’ve had a chance to marvel at the interior, move your focus onto the cabinet brimming with gourmet sandwiches, salads, scones, and so much more. Gina loves having a savoury outlet at Odds and is always coming up with creative combinations. That extends to the cookies, which are out of this world delicious and flavour pairings you won’t find elsewhere. With Minho behind the machine and beans directly from building buddy Switch Espresso, the coffee is exceptional. From batch brews via the Moccamaster to more specialty drinks by request and everything in between, your caffeinated needs are well met at Odds.

The name for Odds Coffee was inspired by Gina and Minho’s journey into hospitality, both ‘by chance’, so if you by chance stumble across Odds, it’s a must to go in. And, if you don’t find it by chance, plug their address into your maps ASAP and plan a visit.
