Posh Porridge takes a familiar breakfast item and turns it into something delicious and surprising yet still recognisable. Their purpose-built space on Montreal Street hums away as owner, Olivia Burt, and her team whip up the compotes, sauces, crumbles and granolas that adorn each bowl of Posh Porridge.

Posh Porridge started out at Riccarton Bush Farmers Market. While they still make weekly market appearances and do plenty of pop ups and deliveries around the city, Posh Porridge’s shop is a must visit. The cosy space offers a wee breakfast nook for mornings when you need a break and plenty of patio seating is available for fair weather days. You can also have Posh Porridge cater a team breakfast meeting or have their dedicated porridge bar descend on your next private function, offering up brunch boxes and bircher bowls aplenty.

Even though they’ve expanded, this breakfast beacon never tries to do too much. The menu’s heart and soul is still porridge but sensible companions like Supreme filter coffee, sweet and savoury toasts and bircher bowls (in summer) take things to the next level. As always, everything is made by hand and from scratch.

Posh Porridge bowls always on offer include the raspberry compote, white chocolate crumble number as well as the boysenberry compote, banana, buckwheat granola and maple syrup combination (totally vegan and refined sugar free). Seasonal bowls have been heaped with combinations like green apple, Fix and Fogg nut butter, toffee sauce and crunchy crumble. Or with colourful apricots, rosemary and pistachio crumble.

Once you’ve got your bowl in hand, head to the cream station to personalise the creation with a bit of yoghurt, oat milk, coconut cream, sugar, honey or any of the other free add ons that are stocked each morning.

Not only are these bowls of porridge crowned with tasty toppings, they’re always piled high with local produce and products. Posh Porridge sources berries and oats from Ashburton, oat milk from Otago, stone fruit from the South Island’s fertile valleys and pretty much everything else from the farmers market where they got their start.

And for those who simply can’t get enough of this delightful breakfast spot, jars of Posh Porridge’s crumbles and granolas are available for purchase in-store or online for collection on Fridays or at the Saturday market.
