10 Welles St, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch

The neatest places often honour their past while delivering something fresh to the communities that embrace them. Supreme Supreme on Welles Street does exactly this, reimagining Chinese supermarket Hop Yik, which closed after the 2011 quakes, as a go-to city coffee spot that keeps one hand on the steam wand and a finger on the pulse of Christchurch's underground scene.

As Coffee Supreme's flagship South Island location, the space draws everyone from young professionals to post-workout locals, emerging creatives to neighbourhood caffeine aficionados. Manager Cassy Townsend moved down from Auckland with a directive: create part café, part speakeasy that both feeds and feeds off the community. She sees Supreme Supreme as the middle child of the roastery's Australasian network: the one who's left home and is thriving on their own terms, part of the family yet distinctly independent.

The building's solid brick exterior serves as a literal white canvas for splashes of Supreme's signature colour. The iconic electric red appears on the roller door, awnings, outdoor seating and neon calligraphy above it all, immediately signalling the punchy energy within. What’s inside walks that elusive line between chic and warmth. Understated seating basks in natural light, while off-whites and wooden accents soften the stripped-back aesthetic, and terracotta tiles tie in notes from both past and present. Against one wall, minimalist shelves display Coffee Supreme beans and paraphernalia. Opposite, a corkboard bursts with local events. A space that feels deliberate without being sterile, vibrant without feeling cluttered.

There’s no big kitchen here, just fresh selections made by the front-of-house. Hot focaccia sandwiches come whole or half (accommodating both appetite and budget). A simplified toast menu, scones that have garnered quite the following around these parts and some seriously good cookies all pair well with their Wellington-roasted blends.

Beyond daily rituals, Supreme Supreme serves the scene it's plugged into. Mornings find you sipping behind your laptop; evenings might bring an album release party. And although this isn't your typical café playing top 40, everyone's welcome to swing by (particularly those who don't mind electronic beats with their brew).
