The Church on the corner of Manchester and Worcester Streets in the heart of the city is a cornerstone of Christchurch hospitality. Housed in a gothic renewal building originally constructed in 1875 as the Trinity Congregational Church, which sat cordoned off post-quake for almost a decade, the brew bar is the result of three years of restoration by Inkster Company.
A unique pub space, yet so fitting for the city, The Church is well worth stepping into just to appreciate the stunning architecture and playful reuse of a building that was left in ruins after the earthquakes. Everything within the space plays homage to the building’s previous existence. The bar sits in front of where an organ once stood, the stage stands by stunning leadlight windows and you might just find yourself sitting on an old church pew.
The Church offers live music throughout the week with ticketed events from time to time. There are 21 taps running with 14 different beers on offer, including Emerson's and a rotating brewer’s tap that runs with seasonal, limited release brews from across Aotearoa. A full bar with a huge variety of wine and spirits supports the hoppy goodness.
Food here is simple, yet always made with the highest quality ingredients. Wood-fired pizzas are the stars of the show, as are the burgers. You’ll also find large plates, bar snacks and even brunch on offer earlier in the day. The service at The Church is professional and attentive, the crew here is passionate about hospitality, and it really shows. This is a spot where everyone is comfortable and where everyone will find a comfy spot, be it right in the middle of the hustle and bustle, in a quiet corner, or outside in the sunny courtyard.
There’s a quiz every Monday and plenty of other happenings that you’ll want to know about by checking The Church’s socials regularly.
