Everyone needs a good local pub in their lives, a place you can go with a relaxed atmosphere, where you are guaranteed to run into a few mates and, most importantly, enjoy a quality pint or two. Two Thumb Brewing Co. on Manchester Street fits these criteria to a tee; with a homely feel, unpretentious attitude and plenty of space, this craft brewery was first established in the early post-quake years and has cemented itself as one of the city’s best watering holes.
In 2017, two Yorkshire-born pals, Mark and Dave, serendipitously bought Two Thumb and, with the help of partner Andy, have grown the brewery and now have several brew bars in Christchurch and Nelson. However, Manchester Street is the original, and while the structure has grown in size since it first opened, it has stayed true to its roots. The laid-back garage-style space is welcoming and homey, with mismatched sofas lining one wall and a mix of high and low tables for patrons to gather at.
There is the all-important performance space, as live music is a huge part of the Two Thumb identity (Mark and Dave were bandmates over 30 years ago and still are to this day) and performing here is a highly desirable gig for Ōtautahi musicians. Plus, there is a bonus space out the back that can be used for private events, or if it’s too cold to make use of the plentiful outdoor seating, this provides further indoor square footage. No matter the weather your doggo is always welcome and is likely to encounter multiple furry friends on any day of the week.
While the majority of the beer is no longer made onsite, as the Two Thumb team has acquired a larger brew space on Colombo Street, the quality is top-notch. Some elements come together to produce their exceptional craft beer, including using locally sourced ingredients and taking the time and energy to utilise sustainable brewing practices. All kinds of beer drinkers will be satisfied with the selection, with classic English-style, malt-forward ales and lagers regularly on tap. They’re famous for their Yorkshire bitter and milk stout, which are both part of the Two Thumb core range, and then there’s the seasonal releases, which give the brewer a chance to experiment and push the boundaries.
If you’re not sure where to start, luckily for you, they have a tasting paddle option. Non-beer lovers don’t need to fear that you’ll be on the ousts at Two Thumb, as they have plenty of other beverage choices, including an impressive range of gins. And all these drinks can be enjoyed alongside something delicious from the permanent food truck. The vendor and cuisine change out frequently, but it's always guaranteed to hit the spot and pair well with your chosen pint.
Two Thumb Manchester Street is all about community and hosts several events throughout the year. Chief among these are the four Beerfests they operate annually, which are a chance for smaller breweries to showcase their offerings. Look out for when these are happening, as it’s an opportunity to discover and taste some incredible beers.
But in the meantime, what are you waiting for… get yourself down to Two Thumb Brewing Co. Manchester Street and see for yourself what all the locals love about it.
