On the edge of Christchurch’s city centre, just as Colombo Street crosses into Sydenham, you’ll find Two Thumb Brewing Co.’s brewery and taproom. Where once stood a bank, it is now home to an impressive craft beer brewing operation, and when the doors opened in 2022, it instantly became many patrons’ new ‘local’.
Craft beer aficionados will be no strangers to the Two Thumb brand, with it first launching soon after the Christchurch earthquakes. There is also a Manchester Street brew bar, which was the original site of the brewery when co-owners Mark and Dave bought Two Thumb back in 2017. Growing in popularity and with a new partner, Andy, on board, the Colombo Street location became available, giving them more brewing space and the opportunity to bring Two Thumb to another part of the city.
Generous in size, the interior of Two Thumb on Colombo can be described best as industrial vibes meet polished aesthetics. The large bar runs along one side of the room, although this is second in focus, as large windows give customers a view into the brewery with the 4,000 litre tanks on full display. You’ve got your pick of seating options, from long tables and bench seating to more intimate tables to a lived-in leather sofa that’s oh-so inviting. The beer garden is a real drawcard with plenty of greenery, festoon lighting, umbrellas and live music, making for an epic outdoor space. You can even order your pint from the bar window and bring your furry friends along; how good is that!
Now, onto the beer itself; sustainable brewing practices and sourcing local ingredients are the keys to producing Two Thumb’s brews. Their style is malt-forward, classic English style ales; they’re famous for their Yorkshire bitter and milk stout, and they have hand-pull taps, which is a rare find in the city these days. The seasonal releases are also well worth a try, as these tend to be more experimental and let the brewer’s creativity shine through. For those who prefer a beverage a little less hoppy, the gin and wine range is impeccable, and the bartenders know how to shake up a serious cocktail.
Like any great pub, the food game at Two Thumb is A+ and the perfect accompaniment to your drink of choice. During the day, they offer hot sandos and fried chicken, and at after-work drinks time, burgers and hand-stretched pizzas appear. It’s just the kind of food you feel like when catching up with a group of friends or unwinding with colleagues after a long day in the office.
After only a visit or two, you’ll quickly feel like a regular at Two Thumb Brewing Co. the community spirit is palpable, the service is always with a smile, and the beer is just darn good.
