Foodies near and far, if a New York-inspired sandwich shop that pulls double-duty slinging pizzas on a Friday night sounds like your jam, you must make a date to visit Lloyds Deli & Pizzeria on Tauranga’s St John Street.
It’s a warm and welcoming environment at Lloyds with an intentionally bare-bones fit-out to squeeze in as many tables as possible. The most notable interior design feature is their eclectic photo wall; a reflection of the team’s shared interests with chefs, sports, pop culture moments and personal connections all making an appearance. On any given lunchtime there’ll be hip hop blasting from the speakers, spare seats are hard to come by and best of all a rowdiness that is reflective of Lloyd’s popularity among locals.
Lloyd’s origin story began with an original pizzeria in a bowling alley on 13th Avenue and after a couple of years building their reputation for serving the best pizza in town, it was clear to owners Job, Tom and Jo they had rapidly outgrown their space. They found their current location and Lloyd’s was born with sandwich day trading added into the mix, as they capitalised on a gap in the Tauranga market for seriously good bodega/deli-style sandwiches.
When it comes to your food order, If you’re looking for a recommendation, it’s hard to go past the Italian Deli. We’re talking fresh fluffy focaccia with cold cuts of Italian meats and cheeses finished with deliciously dressed lettuce. And you better not leave without trying one of their famous salted dark chocolate cookies, they pair perfectly with a single-origin filter or oat flat white. Come Friday nights, it’s pizza time baby and New York-style big round pies are where it’s at, what a way to welcome in the weekend.
Job, Tom and Jo are providing their community with a fresh and different experience at Lloyd’s. They want every visit to include good conversation, good music and good food, and we can confidently say they are smashing this goal.
