If you’ve ever pranced down Stuart Street after dinner or a night out on the Octagon you’ve likely noticed Gallery De Novo. This gallery’s corner space is lit up at all times of the day so that passersby can enjoy the impressive local art housed inside, 24/7.
As the name suggests, Gallery De Novo showcases new and emerging artists from Dunedin and greater New Zealand. The business operates without any of the art world’s sometimes pretentious airs. Fine art can be intimidating but here it’s light, exciting and even fun. As soon as you step in the door you’ll be greeted by the friendly staff and stunning work. Feel free to explore at your own pace or to ask a whole heap of questions - the team truly loves to talk about art.
Established in 2005, Gallery De Novo has made a name for themselves by being both approachable and highly relevant at the same time. Shows rotate monthly here which means there’s always something new to explore. Unlike traditional galleries, the space is open seven days a week so that visitors can experience the work on display as per their schedule.
Gallery De Novo features individual shows as well as group shows in a wide variety of mediums; painting, drawing, printmaking and mixed media. Nothing about this spot is static or boring and that’s even reflected in the physical space. The top and ground floors feature polished exhibitions while the lower floor gives visitors a glimpse into the inner workings of the gallery. Here the team prepares the work to be hung in the gallery and they also do custom framing.
Come and experience the creative hum of this well-loved local gallery – if you find a piece that speaks to you, Gallery De Novo ships all over New Zealand, and the world.
