Nicky and Anja are the mother-daughter duo behind Grid Coffee Roasters and Good Food Co. Located in Mornington, just above the Dunedin CBD, this wee spot is a foodie destination on all fronts.

Grid Coffee Roasters, which inhabits the left-hand side of the space, specialises in small, hand-roasted batches. It’s the kind of place where coffee enthusiasts flock for top-quality beans that deliver on taste, sustainability and ethics. Nicky and her partner Gavin source their beans from an ethical bean broker in Auckland who ensures that the coffee farmers are fairly compensated and well looked after.

Order your favourite coffee and check out the retail section for takeaway beans, home barista equipment and (reusable) takeaway cups while you wait. Be sure to take a look at the roasting machines and raw beans themselves which live in the second half of the shop. The whole coffee roasting process is on display at Grid and the small-scale approach makes for a mean cup of coffee each and every time. Check the board for the different blends currently on offer and for the rotating blend of the month.

To the right-hand side of the space you’ll find Good Food Co. Anja started the shop in 2019 as a way to bring Mornington some of the best locally sourced and imported whole foods. Anja knows lots of her vendors personally and for many of them, Good Food Co. serves as their only shop front.

Good Food Co’s display houses sauerkrauts and kimchi from Forage and Ferment, breads, pastries and croissants from Body of the Year, teas from Heke Herbals, organic veggies from local growers, Kingsmeade cheeses, Wild Kefir drinks, The Brothers Green hemp seeds, 13 Seeds muesli, Clevedon buffalo cheeses, Two Islands wholesome protein powers and so much more. Many of the brands found here have won numerous food producer awards over the years.

If you appreciate a platter every now and again, Good Food Co. has everything you need to construct one that’s impressive, delicious and also supports local. Keep an eye out for platter boxes on offer in the future.

So head up the hill, grab a coffee from Grid, select a nibble or ten from Good Food Co. and give their friend and neighbour Patti’s and Cream a visit too.
