Smith & Sheth is the result of the passion and love of wine of renowned New Zealand Master of Wine Steve Smith and Texas investor Brian Sheth. The two have joined forces in a venture that celebrates the best in wine and brings a tasting experience like no other to Havelock North.
The partnership began with the acquisition of Pyramid Valley, an iconic wine operation, in 2015, and then led to the production of their CRU wines using the best grapes from around the country. (Grand Cru literally means great growths, or vineyards of exceptional quality.) Along the way, they acquired Lowburn Ferry vineyard in Central Otago. In 2019 they opened their village cellar door Smith & Sheth in Havelock North, the ultimate place to do a wine tasting.
From the moment you enter their Village Oenothèque, you are surrounded by luxurious decor and finishes, from the warm wooden flooring and caramel velvet chairs to all of the wines on display. The French word oenothèque translates to wine library, and that’s precisely what the space is, a chance to showcase wines from around the world (not just from the CRU label and the vineyards they own) and have discussions about wine.
Doing a wine tasting here can be tailored to your preferences as the team wants you to enjoy your time and are flexible with their approach. You can enjoy a delicious selection of cheese, charcuterie or other small plates during your tasting if you wish, thanks to the neighbouring Malo restaurant. In the evenings, things switch gears, and the space turns into a wine lounge, making it the perfect spot to meet a group of friends after work.
Last but not least, at Smith & Sheth there is the Heretaunga Wine Studio, a separate area where longer-form showcase wine tastings are held, by appointment only. In the studio, you feel like you are in a centuries-old wine cellar, and no expense has been spared in creating a 360-degree tasting experience. There’s a wall-to-wall digital screen that immerses you in the visual side of winemaking and the importance of Tūrangawaewae, our place to stand in the world.
If you or anyone you know is a lover of wine, then Smith & Sheth is a must-visit.
