There’s something undeniably cheerful about The Baked Dane, a space oozing hygge with a Kiwi twist. Founded by Danish expat Lisa Brink, who fell in love with New Zealand via the tried and tested backpacking route, this Levin favourite brings a freshly baked slice of Scandinavia to the Horowhenua.

Like any good bakery, the vibe here is warm, chatty, and full of energy. The irresistible smell of freshly baked sourdough fills the air, and customers can watch the baking unfold before their eyes on the factory floor, a nod to Lisa’s approach to transparency and her faith in her craftsmanship. The space is a delight to peruse, with vintage and upcycled pieces lending a cosy, lived-in charm that feels more like a creative workshop than a typical bakery.

The shelves are lined with Scandinavian-inspired treats that meld traditional flavour with Kiwi flair. A must-try is the signature Dessert Knækbrød, a crisp, seed-packed cracker layered with caramel, dark chocolate, and a sprinkle of sea salt. Regulars also love the ever-popular range of 100% sourdough loaves, baked fresh from Tuesday to Saturday. Saturdays are a particular treat, when the shop opens for tastings so customers can sample what’s new while soaking up the aroma of warm bread straight from the oven.

A charismatic touch of Scandinavia that brings an uplifting energy to Levin, The Baked Dane isn’t just a spot for top-tier breads and gourmet crackers; it’s a testament to how people from all corners of the world can flourish in and make their mark on New Zealand.
