A top stop spot on the drive from Kaikōura to Marlborough, The Store Kekerengu provides some of the best cafe scenery and incomparable sea views.
Built in 1994, this remarkable coastal property features a high vaulted wooden ceiling together with a double-sided fireplace for those wintery days. The cafe menu includes the usual egg suspects, Best Ugly Bagels and lunch options. A classic cabinet rounds out the food choices alongside the drinks fridge and coffee with beans supplied by Allpress coffee. As well, you will find a small selection of locally inspired retail products, including rugs and pottery, tucked in a corner.
Once you’ve placed your order, take your pick from the mix of indoor seating or head out to the star of the show and pick a spot on the terrace or in the garden. The favourite seat has to be at the top of the stairs with straight pacific ocean views. Follow the path further and discover a large garden brimming with beautiful greenery and plant life. There are also some swinging seats and hidden corners to keep the kids happy. If that fails, take a stroll around the grounds and you’ll come across the cafe vegetable garden, a large open grass area that meets the sea and their coastal camping grounds, which offer a true undisturbed wild coastal experience.
Once you’ve explored the grounds, you’ll understand why this place is also super popular for events and weddings. And if you’ve been lucky, you’ve probably spotted a seal or two.
