3/6 Mahara Place, Waikanae

04 297 0937

Is this the most colourful corner in Waikanae? It could well be, and a visit to Artel Gallery + Store is sure to be a treat for art lovers from around the Kāpiti Coast and beyond.

Artel stands out immediately from the neighbouring shops in Mahara Place, with the bold colours and lines splashed across the storefront instantly drawing you in. The striking mural acts as a frame to a generously sized window that offers a sneak peek of the wonders within. Contrasting with the organised chaos outside, the interior of the gallery is somewhat more orderly, with countless artefacts - from paintings to pounamu and everything in between - displayed neatly on the spotless white walls.

Having started as an artists’ collective in 2009 by a group of locals, Artel has since evolved into a retail gallery space to showcase the best of the Kāpiti Coast’s art scene. On its walls, shelves, and cabinets you’ll find works from around 90 artists and makers from the region, with additional pieces from artists from across the country. The range is staggering, spanning original paintings, sculptures, fine art prints, jewellery, pounamu, handmade ceramic and glass, and other taonga. Every item is locally made, and with many of them available on a limited or exclusive basis, you’re bound to stumble upon a genuine treasure here.

More than just an art gallery and shop, Artel has set out to be that “groovy” local hot spot that every town needs. With its vision of making art feel both exciting and accessible to all, it certainly has a vital role to play in the community.
