Venture a little down the coast from Ōtaki and you’ll find Toi MAHARA, the Kāpiti Coast’s fantastic public art gallery. Sitting proudly in the heart of Waikanae, Toi MAHARA features four distinct gallery spaces that treat you to a dynamic, comprehensive art experience. Don’t miss the Taonga Tuku Iho | Heritage Gallery, which houses 24 paintings by Frances Hodgkins, considered one of the greatest New Zealand artists.

In the sleepy beachside settlement of Te Horo, you’ll find Bus Stop Cafe, a one-of-a-kind coffee spot that's creative, fun, and uplifting. Nestled in a lush garden, this quirky cafe used to be a bus in a past life and in addition to a warm, funky vibe, offers delicious baking, the famous Tironui sourdough, preserves, and even crafts by local creators. Keep an eye out for owner-operator Kirsty’s pet alpacas, who are often spotted grazing on the paddock behind the bus.

Ngā Manu Nature Reserve

74 Ngā Manu Reserve Road, Waikanae

Regarded by many as one of New Zealand’s best kiwi experiences, Ngā Manu Nature Reserve is a beautiful sanctuary teeming with native wildlife and relaxing scenery. Wander through picturesque wetlands and forest trails, where you can spot kākā, kererū, tīeke, and other birds. The kiwi habitat is unsurprisingly one of the most popular spots in the entire reserve. Queen Elizabeth Park

Simply one of the best parks not only on the Kāpiti Coast but the entire Wellington region. It’s absolutely humming around Christmas and in summer in general, but you can come here at any time of year to unwind and relax. Expansive dunes, wetlands, and native bush make up a diverse playground ideal for walking, cycling, and horse riding. Check out the great range of scenic trails with breathtaking views of Kāpiti Island.
