Bright and breezy, Kōwhai Eatery captures everything that’s good about sunny Ōtaki, from its exquisitely plated dishes to the friendly crew who deliver service with a smile.

Situated conveniently on Ōtaki’s main strip, the eatery is an eye-catching splash of yellow with warm green hues. Pastel tones and natural wood textures permeate the cozy space inside, making it an ideal place to unwind with a coffee and a cabinet treat. It’s understated, yet welcoming, with plenty of character, in tune with the easygoing vibes this township is known for. Nestled amongst the appealing array of shopping outlets: Black & Co Quality Leather, Perfume & Cosmetics Ōtaki, Kathmandu, Hunting & Fishing, Bendon, and a host of others are just a stroll away, you can add a side of retail therapy to your order.

The menu itself balances comfort classics done well with a touch of extravagance. There’s whipped feta on ciabatta with pomegranate and a drizzle of hot (or super hot) honey; a halloumi burger stacked with avo, lettuce, tomato, and spicy mayo; and French toast done the Kōwhai way: brioche, vanilla mascarpone, maple, raspberries, caramelised pear, and a flourish of housemade candy floss. Add in a strawberry matcha over ice, a Biscoff hot chocolate, or one of their soft, glazed brioche scrolls, and you’ll understand why people plan their Ōtaki trips around a visit here.

Kōwhai Eatery isn’t just another cafe stop. It’s a celebration of sunny days, good food, fun times, and Ōtaki’s warm manaakitanga that makes you feel at home, no matter where you’re from.
