The Best Cafes for Coffee & Cabinet Treats on the Kāpiti Coast

Tom Thumb’s vegan credentials are particularly strong as well (the custard donuts are a must-try), so it’s a safe pick for those with dietary requirements – or if you simply fancy trying something a little different.

This Waikanae Beach institution has built a loyal following around its combination of community spirit and seriously good baking – the long weekend queues say it all.

And while it’s perhaps best known for its legendary pies, the sweet pastry range holds its own as well. Think flaky French-style pastries, almond croissants, cinnamon rolls, and filled donuts, alongside a revolving selection of other sweet and savoury delights.

Pick up a coffee and a sweet treat, park up at the courtyard out back, and soak in the sun and the beachside vibes.

Joe & Joy is a husband-and-wife-run bakery and cafe in the heart of Waikanae, and the cabinet is very much the main event here.

The creme brulee donut is the one to get familiar with. It’s achieved local celebrity status, combining the familiar comfort of a donut with the crackly, creamy appeal of creme brulee. If that sounds like too much fun for a weekday morning, we’re not sure what to tell you.

Then there is the donut of the week, which is your excuse to keep coming back. The cakes are another strong suit, and of course there is plenty of substantial brunch fare if your coffee and treat quietly evolves into lunch.

Bright, breezy, and unapologetically cheerful, Kōwhai Eatery brings a little sunshine to Ōtaki’s main strip, with their brioche scrolls one of their hottest drawcards. Pillowy, buttery, and finished with a generous glaze, they’re exactly the sort of thing that pairs beautifully with a hot coffee.

There is plenty more to tempt you if you’re after something substantial – the menu ranges from halloumi burgers to sweet and savoury waffles, along with other classic brunch staples.

The Lockup started life as a takeaway window in 2020 and has grown into a community favourite, with a big outdoor area, covered verandah, kids’ play corner, and plenty of room for dogs.

The coffee is brewed with local Dark Horse beans, but the homemade baking is what makes a visit particularly worthwhile. The Lockup’s custard squares have a reputation for being next-level, sitting among a cabinet of homemade cakes and other sweet treats.

It’s a good place to embrace the full Kāpiti experience: coffee in hand, custard square on plate, sandy feet somewhere nearby – and absolutely no reason to be in a hurry.

Beach Road Deli has been part of Paekākāriki’s landscape for nearly two decades. Bright, beachy, and friendly, it boasts an extensive bagel menu and a cabinet packed with housemade goodies.

The cake selection here is not to be missed. The cabinet is ever-changing, but freshly made cakes, slices, and other sweet treats are regular fixtures. Keep an eye out for their carrot cake, which consistently receives rave reviews.

If there was ever an eatery that did exactly what it said on the tin, it’s The Custard Pie in Paraparaumu. You can get chunky custard pies here – plenty of them – and the vanilla pie is the one to start with.

There is something satisfyingly straightforward about the whole proposition. Good coffee, a fresh custard pie, and a cabinet that knows exactly what it is doing. And for those who want to mix it up, there are plenty of additional sweet and savoury surprises too, from meat pies to lolly cakes and other slices.

Seriously Pickled is a deli and catering kitchen that feels more like someone’s well-organised kitchen than a conventional cafe, with shelves of pickles, relishes, sauces, and artisan goods surrounding a cabinet of fresh sweet and savoury treats.

The cheese scones – ranked the second best in the Wellington region – are the must-try here. The wider menu changes regularly according to what’s in season, so this excellent rendition of a Wellington staple is a reassuring constant in a place full of surprises.
