Casa Nova House is a perfect example of Ōamaru’s historic architecture turning a new page in its storied history. This property is over 160 years old and is the town’s oldest stone dwelling, it’s a bed-and-breakfast oasis hidden within suburbia.
Owners and hosts Brenda and Katrina fell in love with the property and the seaside charm of Ōamaru during a whirlwind trip to the Waitaki region in 2019. What was initially a group holiday to do the Central Otago Rail Trail turned into a relocation from Auckland and an exciting new chapter for Brenda, Katrina, and Casa Nova House. The site has undergone an extensive renovation, with the couple dedicated to marrying the charm of yesteryear with the comforts of the 21st Century. What they have created is a luxurious bed and breakfast that any visitor to the region would relish the chance to stay at, plus the onsite Restaurant 1861 is a favourite among locals and travellers alike.
As soon as you arrive at Casa Nova House, the beautiful and extensive English countryside-style gardens will transport you to another world and time. Shift your attention from the manicured hedges and towering trees to the commanding Ōamaru stone building, complete with many original period features. When you walk through the front door, you will be greeted by the unique furnishings of the property that reflect the personality of your hosts, from a sparkling chandelier to art deco canvases adorning the walls to colourful and plush carpet throughout.
This unique decoration and style continue through to the guest rooms upstairs, with each one bearing the name of a previous owner, a nod to the history of Casa Nova House. There are thoughtful touches all around, from vibrant wallpapers to custom wall cut-outs that feature the original stone in each suite. Make sure to check out the well-stocked minibar with all sorts of premium New Zealand sips and snacks to treat yourself to.
Speaking of food, Casa Nova’s Restaurant 1861 is well worth a visit, even if you aren’t staying in one of the rooms. Bringing Spanish-inspired tapas dishes to town, Brenda is the head chef, and the menu she has created is focused on shining a light on fresh, seasonal produce and is, most importantly, perfect for sharing with loved ones. The dining room space is intimate, and the impeccable service combined with delicious food will leave you wanting to return over and over again.
Casa Nova House and what Brenda and Katrina are doing here demonstrate how our heritage buildings should be treated. Honouring the past and historical significance whilst breathing new life and stories into an iconic space. Whether you stay a few days or dine in for dinner, you will be wowed by your experience here.
