Clay has been used as a medium to craft pottery since prehistoric times, yet its novelty hasn’t worn off – arguably, the allure of a handcrafted ceramic holds even more value in today’s fast-paced world. Andrew Killick is one artisan preserving this tradition, using his hands to create one-off pieces to be cherished for many lifetimes.
Andrew moved to Ōamaru and opened his Thames Street store and studio, Silenzio Pottery, in 2022. His history with throwing clay, however, began from early childhood, with the hum of the pottery wheel sending him to sleep each night. As well-known New Zealand potters themselves, his parents passed on all the knowledge and skills they gained over the 33 years they were in business. Andrew worked with them in his 20s, continuing on to establish his own brand, Laughing Pottery, in Waihi before making the move down south. There’s a beauty to be seen in the inevitable uniqueness of each piece, and Andrew loves the idea that an artist’s legacy will endure through these perfectly imperfect marks.
At Silenzio Pottery, each piece has been thoughtfully handcrafted by Andrew using New Zealand stoneware clay and custom glazes made in the studio. The core range offers everyday homeware essentials, where each collection is distinguished by glazes that reflect the local landscape – from Whitestone, reminiscent of the region’s architecture, to deep turquoise Bluestone, inspired by the Otago rivers. These collections are complemented by a smaller selection of bespoke pieces that are only made once.
Passionate about sharing his craft with others, Andrew also hosts fun and relaxed workshop sessions for both individuals and groups. In these 1.5 hour sessions, participants learn the basics and craft two small bowls and a tumbler to take home (and feel very chuffed about).
