An institution and a household name in Wellington, not many people know that Moore Wilson’s is also a stalwart of Porirua’s grocery scene.
Offering all the trappings of its more central sister store, the Porirua branch delivers an authentic Moore Wilson’s experience to locals. Browsing the clean, spacious aisles and perusing the vast range of fresh and bulk goods, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were on Tory Street.
That’s until you take a closer look and notice the subtle differences that help this Moore Wilson’s store carve out its own character. Miramar’s Human Dynamo Studio, led by Sue Dorrington, was tasked with the fit-out of the O'Sushi pod beside the entrance, which is dominated by a Japanese-style mural of Mana Island—the perfect backdrop for enjoying sushi or a bowl.
Further along, custom-made signs guide you to the Wine, Beer and Spirits department. The design of this area was inspired by the vibes of the Mana boatsheds; one of the highlights is the counter that's styled as a vintage wooden veneer launch.
A weekend trip to check out the fresh market department is a staple on many locals’ to-do lists. Grab a coffee and find all the fresh fruit, vegetables, small goods, meat, and artisan breads you need. Moana has a fresh seafood retail site in-store to provide you with all your kaimoana needs. Or, if you’ve already got an eye on that party you’re hosting next week, stop by the food service section to pick up your bulk essentials. The kitchen and homeware department has you covered for all things cooking and serving—and don’t forget the wine.
With its sizeable range of fresh, quality goods made accessible to the everyday household shopper, a trip here rewards you with a true Moore Wilson’s experience, with a dash of Porirua flair. There’s even a rapid EV car charger (and 300 solar panels), making it a great pit stop on the way up and down the coast.
