Pukerua Bay
Pukerua Bay
Looking for a beachside walk that’s not like the others? Hidden gem Pukerua Bay is exactly what you’re looking for, and once you’ve been, you’ll see why locals keep quiet about their wild and beautiful coastline—this place is a winner exactly because it’s free from crowds. In 2012 a six-metre-high carved Pou Tangaroa was placed on the Pukerua Bay foreshore, and now this magnificent carving is a popular spot to take a breather and remember for a moment all those who came before.
There’s a small collection of shops here too, so if quirky second-hand bookstores are your thing, make sure to delve into the shelves for a while. It's likely that you’ll come across treasures here that you wouldn't find anywhere else. Pukerua Bay Store is a prime spot to kick back with an ice cream after a walk on the beach or along the Escarpment Track.
The kind of charming small village where time seems to slow and nothing is a problem, make sure you stop off at Pukerua Bay for a coastal dose of holiday vibes, no matter the day of the week.
