Porirua is an unabashedly Pasifika city, happy to flaunt its colours and culture - from the enticing scent of freshly fried panikeke in eastern Porirua to the handcrafted jewellery at Pātaka, the city’s flagship art gallery and museum.

While retaining this core, Porirua’s demography has evolved over the years to embrace many new cultures, becoming one of the region’s most diverse spots. One of the many upsides to this, of course, is the ever-growing range of shopping on offer. From Pasifika gift stores to local food and beverage icons, here’s where you can pick up your own slice of Porirua to take home.

16 Parumoana St, Porirua

Head along to this converted shipping container right on the harbour’s edge and simply get lost in the riotous palette of colour within. A neat little operation showcasing quality, handcrafted Pasifika-inspired goods, the items here are sure to add a splash of life to any home. Choose from the cushions, bed covers, and lampshades made by founders Pip or Ramona (or another local creator), or keep an eye out for those statement earrings.

Across the road from the beautiful Titahi Bay Beach you’ll find Aloha Friday, a popular neighbourhood cafe that doubles as an art gallery and gift shop. Order a coffee and browse the immaculately displayed jewellery, keep cups, cushions, and other gifts you can take away with your latte. A caffeine pick-me-up paired with a unique gift for yourself or a friend - what more do you need?

Toi Store at Pātaka

17 Parumoana Street, Porirua City Centre, Porirua

Toi Store is the gift shop housed within Pātaka Art + Museum - and you’d be forgiven for mistaking it as an extension of the museum itself. The flagship items here are the exquisite handmade jewellery, designed and crafted by local Maōri and Pasifika artists. In addition to these pieces made right here in Porirua, you’ll find a range of art books, ceramics, and other treasures for that art lover in your life.

Panikeke

6 Serlby Place, Porirua City Centre, Porirua

Fittingly located in the heart of the Porirua city centre, Panikeke is a celebration of the city’s proudly Pacific spirit. It showcases this through its range of colourful Pasifika clothing, accessories, and gifts, bringing the warm breeze of the Pacific through its bright yellow storefront. You could spend a decent chunk of time here perusing the shelves of beauty products (check out the coconut oils and soaps), homeware, bags, and dresses.

Little City Kombucha

3/51 Kenepuru Drive, Kenepuru, Porirua

Hidden in a corner of industrial Kenepuru you’ll find the home of Little City Kombucha, a proud Porirua brand that’s all about wellbeing and sustainability - and effervescent, Kiwi-made kombucha. You can buy their fantastic product at any of their stockists around the Wellington region, but a trip to the LCK factory is always worth it. Check out the fill-your-own wall, where you can pour one of the flavours of the month yourself, or pick up a few bottles of your favourite kombucha - the Mixed Berry comes highly recommended.

Samoa's Finest

2 Commerce Crescent, Waitangirua, Porirua

Some of the best shops in Porirua are found in its sleepy, unassuming suburbs, and Samoa’s Finest is one such example. A small store that’s easy to drive past if you’re not looking out for it, this little food bar sells, well, Samoa’s finest snacks. Dig into all the panikeke, pineapple pie, Samoan pork buns, and chop suey you can handle - the food here is as delicious as it is authentic. Be quick though, the queues here are long at the best of times, although you’ll sure enough find out why.
