Tunapo Escape
Located just 35 minutes from central Wellington atop the picturesque Paekākāriki Hill, Tunapo Escape is a tiny house getaway that provides an escape in every sense of the word.
Once you navigate your way up the country road that gets you there, the first thing that hits you is the panoramic views, some of the best you’ll find in the region. While Kāpiti Island dominates the horizon, on a good day you’ll also be able to spot Mount Taranaki, Mount Ruapehu, and the South Island. The house’s strategic position and floot-to-ceiling windows throughout mean these vistas can be enjoyed from every angle, or for something truly special, soak them in from the comfort of the outdoor bath.
It may be a sustainable, 100% off-grid spot, but Tunapo Escape is fitted out with all the high-end mod cons to rival any luxury getaway. From the tiled shower and underfloor heating to the well-equipped kitchen with an emerald green splashback (to match the armchair, of course), every little detail has been crafted to deliver an indulgent, relaxing stay.
At Tunapo Escape, you’re invited to craft an experience of your own—be as active or as indolent as you want. Cook up a storm yourself in the kitchen or on the BBQ, or if you want a break from cooking, owner Hannah (a trained chef) has you covered with a range of customised dinner packages to choose from. The Escarpment Track, Paekākāriki, and Pukerua Bay are a stone’s throw away if you’re up for some exploring, or stay in and check out the board games. There’s no TV or wi-fi, but you definitely won’t need those, and don’t forget that outdoor bath.
Being situated on a farm means complete privacy from the outside world, with your only companions, the curious sheep and cattle, roaming about. A getaway like no other, Tunapo Escape invites you to experience Paekākāriki in a truly unique way.
