Gallery and museum gift shops are sometimes seen as a nice-to-have, a neat place to peruse some trinkets on the way out. Toi Store at the renowned Pātaka Art + Museum is so much more, however - a classy space that serves not only as an extension of the museum itself, but an encore that amplifies the Pātaka kaupapa.
Situated right by the entrance, Toi Store flows seamlessly into and out of the museum experience, aided by the wide open spaces, shelves and display tables spilling out into the foyer, and expansive windows that invite the looks of curious passersby. The afternoon sun streams into the store in abundance, bouncing off the spotless white walls and lending the ceramic and glass works an enticing shimmer. With all manner of curios hanging on the walls and encased in uniform glass cabinets, it certainly feels more museum than shop.
Just like the focus of the artworks on display throughout Pātaka, the crafts at Toi Store revolve around the work of contemporary artists from across New Zealand, especially Maōri and Pasifika artists. Notably, the Porirua region boasts a large number of contemporary jewellers, many of whom honed their skills at the Whitireia polytechnic - which has enjoyed a close relationship with Pātaka for more than 25 years. You’ll find some of their handiwork at Toi Store, along with unique art books, cards, ceramics, and other taonga.
Don’t miss a stop at Toi Store on your next visit to Pātaka, and pick out a gift or a statement piece for your home with the knowledge that you’re not only shopping, but also supporting New Zealand’s art sector.
