A little off the beaten track in Gibbston, proudly stands the home of Mt Rosa – a wine label and cellar door that has played a pivotal role in shaping the region’s world-class wine reputation for over 20 years.
From day one, Mt Rosa has been 100% family-owned and -operated by Guy and Ann Boanas. However, grapevines weren’t always part of the original plan. Upon settling in Gibbston as station owners and sheep farmers, they swiftly transitioned from tending to woolly creatures to producing wine, when it was discovered the terrain was challenging for farming but a haven for vineyards. The first vines were planted in 2000 and harvested a couple years later, marking the beginning of a journey that has delighted wine lovers since.
Today, Mt Rosa offers a range of single-estate wines, from Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris to the unique Pinot Blanc and Gamay Noir, as well as a vibrant Rosé. While the taste is exquisite, it’s nice to know the wine has also been crafted with the environment and local community in mind, certified under the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) programme.
The Cellar Door offers an idyllic setting to savour each drop. In a relaxed rural setting that overlooks rows of vines with dramatic mountain surroundings, it’s all too easy to spend an afternoon here – be it by the roaring fire in winter or in the sunny courtyard where rosé flows from a pink cart during summer. Guests can choose to taste each varietal, or focus on Mt Rosa’s impressive Pinot Noir offering, alongside platters showcasing the finest regional produce – from Whitestone Cheese to Aoraki hot smoked salmon.
As soon as you step through the doors, it becomes apparent that Mt Rosa is not like other wineries. If we had to put our finger on it, we’d point to its people. Guy and Ann, along with their close-knit team (and canine companions), have created a place where guests come together for a memorable experience of great wine, stories and laughter.
