Next time you’re walking down Ballarat Street, look up in search of a small piece of Japanese paradise. Protruding gracefully above the bustling pathway, a traditional temple-like exterior inscribed with floral motifs invites you to ascend a few flights and enjoy a truly authentic dining experience.

When you walk into Kappa, you’re instantly embraced with warmth and familiarity, albeit in a new continent. The soaring ceiling and exposed panelling creates a dramatic A-frame that evokes a rather spiritual ambience – appropriate for the heaven-sent Japanese food waiting to be devoured.

The menu at Kappa is relatively concise, with an unwavering commitment to quality. Customers return more regularly than they’d care to admit for the signature sashimi platter, light and crispy blue cod tempura and succulent grilled eggplant. A premium selection of traditional drinks are also available to enjoy alongside, including yuzu or plum wine, sake served hot or cold, and shochu (Japanese vodka).

Owner and chef Naoya Higuchi moved to Queenstown in 2000, and began working in the kitchen of Kappa a year later before taking ownership in 2007. Ask any top chef around town where to eat and they’ll call out this spot without a moment’s hesitation. Higuchi has created a foodie destination that is celebrated by hospitality professionals, loyal locals (three generations of them) as well as visitors who are lucky enough to be in the know.
