Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown

Next time you’re strolling along the Marine Parade in Queenstown, dig out your “lake legs'' and hop aboard New Zealand’s only floating bar. Perky’s looks out across one of the country’s most magnificent landscapes, where the deep blue waters of Lake Whakatipu stretch out towards a breathtaking panorama of rugged mountain peaks.

Originally named Ngaroto, the boat was born in England in the 1950s before being shipped off to Rotorua to operate as a cruise ship. It wasn’t until 2007 that the Perkins family got their hands on the vessel, giving it one heck of a facelift and a new career taking passengers on lunchtime voyages across the lake.

Nowadays, the boat is permanently moored in Lake Whakatipu, enjoying its retirement as a hotspot for local beers, wines, well-crafted cocktails and more. While you won’t find a kitchen onboard, this also happens to be one of the best places to dine in Queenstown, inviting patrons to bring along their favourite takeaways (or even a homemade picnic) to tuck into while savouring the drinks and remarkable views.

For its humble size, there are a surprising number of cosy pockets to make yourself comfortable, all year round. The main cabin area offers refurbished red velvet booths, while the sunny deck is ideal for soaking in the uninterrupted scenery. If you’re lucky enough, you may even secure a spot at the bow (just keep the Jack and Rose reenactments to a minimum). The size of the boat definitely lends itself to more intimate gatherings, whether that’s date night, catching up with a couple of friends or simply enjoying quality time with your furry friend.

Yes, drinking at Perky’s is a novel experience. However, this isn’t just a one-off attraction to tick off your list – and you’ll find both tourists and locals frequently returning.
