Inside The Red Barn on Hawthorne Drive in Frankton, just around the corner from the airport, the beloved Remarkables Market takes flight each Saturday from October through to April.
Featuring over 60 stalls, doubling during the Christmas Markets, each week brings a fresh array of friendly faces and enticing offerings. From seasonal fruit and veggies, artisan cheeses, olives and olive oils to freshly baked goods, international food trucks, excellent coffee, handmade jewellery, local wool, art, pet stalls and more, there are endless delights to load your basket with.
And while every town may have its own neighbourhood market, the stunning backdrop of The Remarkables mountain range sets this particular one apart from the rest. Beyond picking up goodies at each stall, a simple shopping trip is transformed into a memorable Saturday ritual, with live music, picnic tables, rugs and playground areas inviting visitors to linger a little longer.
Kicking off in 2010, the Remarkables Market has committed to a sustainable ethos since day one, with a range of eco-friendly practices in place. It became New Zealand's first Single Use Cup Free (SUC Free) market in 2019, has completely replaced disposable serveware for ceramic plates and metal cutlery, offers compost bins and recycling bins that are sorted throughout the day, and has significantly reduced landfill waste with over 34,000 items washed and reused across more than 20 Saturdays (an inspiring achievement for markets elsewhere).
There’s a palpable sense of camaraderie at the Remarkables Market, with vendors and visitors banding together to create a destination that prioritises people and planet. Whether you’re a local or fresh off the runway, there are few better places to spend your Saturday morning in Queenstown.
