Secret Spot is an award-winning forest bathing retreat tucked into the heart of Whakarewarewa Forest in Rotorua. Here, secluded cedar hot tubs brim with fresh spring water beside the Puarenga Stream, inviting visitors to relax and reset after a day of adventure. At the push of a button, you can order a craft beer or manuka-roasted coffee right to your tub, turning every moment into an effortless escape without ever having to move a muscle.
The idea sprang from childhood memories shared by brothers Keith and Eric Kolver, who grew up exploring the Kaituna River and nearby bush. After experiencing a wild storm on the Whakatāne River, the pair dreamt of warming up in a steaming pool, with thoughts of mulled wine and hot tubs dancing through their heads. That spontaneous spark turned into a plan: they built Secret Spot from the ground up, planting over 3,000 native trees and weaving Kiwi hospitality into every detail. What began in 2019 as a brotherly experiment quickly blossomed into a local favourite and now a three-time winner of the World Luxury Spa Awards’ Best Forest Bathing Spa.
Secret Spot offers more than just hot tubs. Each cedar tub experience comes with access to a complimentary cold plunge, while free “Shinny Dip” foot hot tubs are available for cafe-goers; perfect for soothing tired legs after mountain biking or dog walking in the nearby forest. The latest addition, the Sauna Corner, provides two luxurious hinoki-wood saunas which overlook a nearby waterfall. BaseCamp, the luxe safari-style café and bar onsite is housed in a big canopy style tent, offering a real safari vibe. Slinging smash burgers from inside its permanent food truck, BaseCamp is also famed for its mouthwatering chicken satay roti, seasonal sangria, and friends-of-the-owners Good George craft beer. Each weekend, Live Music Saturdays fill the clearing with local talent.
Secret Spot is a place where locals can unwind after work and travellers can recharge on their journey through Aotearoa, all against the backdrop of lush native forest. Secret Spot has become both a sanctuary and a social hub, proof that slowing down and reconnecting can be the most rejuvenating adventure of all.
