The Silverstream Hotel, a historical country pub in Kimbell, is an iconic Mackenzie region destination. The pub is currently undergoing revitalisation in the hands of young new owners, Lockie and Caroline Broadfoot, who are all about preserving the old while doing the renovations.

So far, they have tweaked the menu to include options for various dietary needs, while holding tight to crowd favourites such as lamb rump and pork belly.  They have also turned a previously underutilised backyard into a lush beer garden, added a splash of paint on the walls and restored the old exterior limestone wall to its former glory.

Like all true country pubs, Silverstream Hotel hosts regular live music by local and visiting musicians, cranks up the log burner on cold dreary days for a bit of warmth and ambiance, plus runs a number of regular events (quiz night anyone?). There’s a fire pit outside, kids play area and a petanque court, and in keeping with the idyllic setting, a bunch of chickens run around the garden. Indoors, a pool table awaits players together with cosy leather couches.

The bar boasts a good selection of New Zealand craft beers and with Mt Dobson ski field, Fairlie and Burke’s Pass all within a fifteen minute drive, Silverstream is a popular halfway stop as well as the local’s go-to.
