If a unique, cosy atmosphere, regular live music and a great selection of beverages sound like your kind of bar, then Hector Black’s is a must-visit. Housed in Timaru’s historical National Bank of New Zealand building on Stafford Street, the bar’s interiors nod towards South Canterbury’s equestrian heritage with walls adorned in polo mallets, vintage saddles and bookshelves heaving with A&P catalogues.
And let’s not forget the namesake of the bar, Hector Black; the owner’s beloved taxidermy Jack Russell that stands pride of place in a glass cabinet in the centre of the bar. Hector’s son, Nash, is the live mascot of the pub and can be spotted following his master around whenever the bar is open.
On top of a good selection of various brews, including Timaru’s own Ship Hop Brewery’s craft beer, an extensive wine and cocktail list, Hector Black’s offers bar nibbles such as a ploughman’s platter.
Once you’ve taken the time to appreciate the wonderland of relics indoors (make sure to take a closer look at some of the paintings), find that perfect corner to make your own or step outside to the sunny upstairs balcony.
Hector Black’s hosts regular events including Sunday School, where locals get a chance to share their expertise with one another whatever that may be.
Up the road, you can explore Black & Co plus a number of other small shops owned by the same family.
