E. Hayes and Sons has been open for business in Invercargill for four generations and their ingenuity, friendly service and passion for getting things done is what they’ve built their success on.
Not only is E. Hayes and Sons an incredibly well stocked hardware store, it also boasts the extensive E. Hayes Motorworks Collection that is free to view, during normal shop hours. Nestled between rows of modern, top of the line tools you’ll discover an extensive collection of vintage and classic motorbikes, cars and machines as well as memorabilia from Burt Munro’s motorbike career.
Munro, an internationally recognized motorcycle racer, remains one of Invercargill and Southland's most celebrated figures. As you wander through E. Hayes and Sons you’ll find Munro’s authentic, original and legendary 1920 customised Indian motorcycle on which he set a 1967 world record when he coaxed it up to 184.087 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA. 50+ years later, Munro’s record on ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’ remains unbroken. His pistons, engines and helmets are also on display throughout the store.
E. Hayes and Sons features collections of vintage tools, typewriters, push bikes, and chainsaws as well. This attraction is unique and thoughtfully laid out in a way that prompts visitors to stop and think about how even the most basic tools have evolved over time.
