In a suburb that seems like it’s perpetually on holiday, easy-going modern deli Betsy feels right at home in Island Bay. Don’t be surprised to see pups in here or horses trotting down the main street - there’s a local marae a few blocks back and the horses make for an easy transport option when there’s a craving for coffee.
This little eatery has become a hot spot for locals - the staff here reckon they know at least 50% of visitors by first name (or coffee order). Betsy is much more than just a quick takeaway joint, instead, be prepared to spend an easy hour or two here in the small but considered space - plus it’s hard to turn down the generous slabs of chocolate brownie or ginger crunch to go alongside your flat white. Wanting a more substantial lunch? Settle in with a hearty Rueben ciabatta, fresh pasta or savoury pie (everything is made on site bar the bread which comes from Shelly Bay Bakery). And if it’s a take home meal you’re after Betsy has you covered there too. Meals of the week are announced on social media on a Monday and always include a vegetarian, vegan or meat option - think comfort food like lasagnes, cottage pies, nachos and enchiladas to name a few. Fit to feed one hungry person, (or two if you add some sides) the meals can be picked up cold from the deli throughout the week.
And you can forget having to drive into town to pick up locally-made foodie products, Betsy stocks products by Esther’s, Libertine Blends, Six Barrel Soda and more.
It’s easy to see why the bright and cheerful deli has become such a hit with the community, and even if you’re new to the neighbourhood you can rest easy knowing the smiley staff in stripes will make you feel right at home here.

Empire is fitting for a cinema that pre-dated ‘talkies’ when it played its first reel in 1925, but as far as movie theatres go, this one is more for those who’d pick pinot over popcorn.
