After many a lunchtime spent hankering for just a ‘good old sandwich’ much like the ones experienced in New York delis, Tim Tracey and Mia Freeman decided to take matters into their own hands and open Wellington’s version of the infamous deli; Pickle and Pie.
Growing up on an orchard means chef Tim has the knack of pickling, preserving and bottling well mastered. The range of pies under heat lamps in the front counter are a clever display option, although it’s hard to pass up the classic Reuben sandwich or pastrami loaded fries from the lunch menu – all designed for easy takeaway. Giant jars of sweets on the counter from big biccies, to pumpkin pie and filled doughnuts means you’d be silly to come only for a savoury lunch, while Kōkako coffee, Noble & Savage tea and Six Barrel Soda are the perfect accompaniments to wash it all down with. There’s also beer and wine for those fancying turning the afternoon into a laidback session, with Peroni on tap and Aperol Spritz accompanied nicely by Pickle & Pie’s supper menu.
Busy staff flitting about the space are distinguishable in their smart charcoal aprons, and upbeat tunes make for a hustling bustling atmosphere where getting a table is sometimes easier said than done. Jars of preserves make an impressive wall feature - the floor to ceiling shelving contains Pickle and Pie’s own variations of pickles, chutneys, smoked salt, muesli and meat rubs.
Dinner boxes are another unique take on an eatery that’s happy to provide meals at any time of the day. With what’s on offer changing daily and posted on the Pickle & Pie Facebook in the afternoons, it’s sure worth calling up and pre-ordering before picking up in later in the day.
