Having built a reputation for feeding Wellingtonians healthy breakfasts on the go, it was only a matter of time before food caravan The Oatery set up a permanent shop. It couldn’t have found a more apt spot than the little slice of Left Bank it now claims as its own.
While certainly standing out from the rest of Left Bank, thanks to its dazzling, pure white storefront, The Oatery also seems to happily blend in with its neighbours, the eclectic businesses that line this little patch of Cuba Street. Owner Anna Campbell, saw potential in this forgotten corner of Left Bank, and the makeover has been stunning. Large windows and glass doors invite people into the light, airy space. Pristine white surfaces are punctuated by a range of textures - blackboards, wooden chairs, black leather seats - to create the perfect ambience for a healthy snack.
If you thought the fitout was meticulous, wait till you see the menu. Campbell’s focus on running an “ingredient-conscious” business means the food is guided by the seasons, and organic oats feature prominently. In addition to the classic porridge, granola, and bircher muesli options, there are toasts now thrown into the mix (made with legendary Wellington Sourdough, of course). With toppings ranging from piccalilli to feta whip, tarragon creme fraiche to burnt honey butter and more, it’s a selection to rival any toast menu in town.
Carrying the caravan’s evergreen favourites as well as an innovative array of new treats, fans of The Oatery now know exactly where to go for their guilt-free fix.
