Nestled in a quiet corner of Ōtaki, ATB is the kind of creative space where you come in for a tattoo and end up staying for the conversation and maybe even a coffee and a biscuit. Run by Mikey and Amy Hurman, ATB is part tattoo studio, part art gallery, and part beauty therapy clinic - a combination that is testament to the dynamic duo’s formidable talents.

Originally standing for ‘Abandon The Box’, the name is - perhaps a little ironically for a tattoo studio - a reminder to stop colouring inside the lines and think a bit differently. That philosophy runs throughout, as framed artwork of all sizes and vinyl stickers jostle for space on every available surface. Yet it’s relaxed and welcoming; clean, professional, and comfortable without the clinical feel that can sometimes come with a tattoo studio. It’s geared towards helping people kick back, have a laugh, and indulge in some shared creative spirit.

Mikey’s creative journey was heavily influenced by his long-time immersion in street art culture, and that streak shows through in the distinctive designs seen at ATB. But there’s plenty more going on - alongside tattoos, visitors can explore original artwork, illustrations, fine art prints, stickers, apparel, merchandise, and aftercare products, with guest artists, art nights, and creative events also in the mix. Amy brings her own wealth of experience from high-end beauty salons in the UK and Wellington, with massages, facials, lashes, brows, and other beauty treatments expanding the offering.

For Mikey and Amy, ATB is ultimately about creating a space where art, self-care, and good people come together - it’s no wonder it’s already a genuine creative hub for Ōtaki.
