Based in a house overlooking Lyall Bay, Niche Textile Studio was set up by Christine Brimer to help share her passion with Wellingtonians - creating beautiful woven homeware with a focus on sustainability.

As classroom environments go, there are few more attractive spots to learn in than the Lyall Bay home. Sweeping views of the south coast are complemented by the warm, cosy interior, where plain white walls go hand-in-hand with an array of timber surfaces. Myriad fabric textures are found in every corner, giving an obvious hint to what you can expect: weaving, and lots of it.

And with classes limited to three people who can book together as a group and set in Christine’s abode, a workshop at Niche feels as much like a meeting with friends as it does an educational session.

Each workshop begins with a cuppa and some snacks to get everyone settled in, before participants learn about and get hands-on with the looms. Once familiar with the technique, the focus shifts to crafting a wall hanging or a piece of cloth to take home that can be made into a cushion front, diary cover, zipper purse, or table runner.

The small group size allows for highly personalised learning, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. A day at Niche is a win-win for everyone involved: students get to learn a new skill from a master of the craft, while Christine gets to help them indulge in her passion for wool, woven cloth, and looms.
