From festivals and food trails to live music, kapa haka and long-running local events - Hamilton’s events calendar is full of reasons to head into town year-round.

Summer: January – February

January

The region always starts out strong with Soundsplash, bringing a plethora of music, kai and camping to Raglan every January.

February

The Chinese Lantern Festival is a huge hit this time of year, drawing crowds of thousands to mark the end of the Lunar New Year with a free, family-friendly evening of traditional food, shows and lantern displays.

Te Matatini o Ngā Taniwha will also bring one of Aotearoa’s biggest cultural events to Hopuhopu in February 2027, with kapa haka groups and supporters travelling from across the motu to the world’s largest Māori performing arts competition.

Hamilton Arts Festival Toi Ora ki Kirikiriroa takes over Hamilton Gardens, turning it into a full-blown festival hub brimming with live performance: everything from theatre, music and dance, to circus, cabaret, spoken word and more.

Autumn: March – May

March

Balloons over Waikato is another special one to bookmark: a week-long spectacle of massive hot air balloons filling the skies above the city, ushering out the end of summer.

Meanwhile, the Waikato Supper Club fundraiser has quickly become one of the city’s most special food events, raising money for families with a child in hospital.

April – May

Returning to its Hamilton roots in 2027, the iconic Homegrown festival is set to bring another huge all-Aotearoa music line-up to Claudelands.

Although dates haven’t been confirmed yet, keep an eye on the Urban Wine Walk, the ultimate self-guided tasting experience (best done with a group of vino-loving friends). Wander the city, meet the makers and sample the best wines of the region from top-notch local venues.

Following the success of its inaugural Championship Tour event here in 2026, the World Surf League will return to Manu Bay in Raglan in 2027 - drawing another major sporting crowd to the region to see some of the world’s greatest surfers hit these iconic beaches, including two Kiwi wildcard spots also up for grabs through their local trials. Exact dates are yet to be announced, so keep an eye out.

Winter: June – August

It might be getting colder, but that doesn’t mean quieter.

June

We couldn’t cover this area at this time of year without mentioning Fieldays: the Southern Hemisphere’s largest agricultural event and the ultimate launch platform for cutting-edge technology and innovation.

July

July marks Matariki (Māori New Year), a time to rest, reflect and remember. With celebrations across the city, from free local events to special kai offerings at local spots like Mr Pickles, it’s an important time to nourish the soul and the belly.

August

Keep an eye out for the second Love Bites hospitality month, with a range of central eateries creating innovative one-off bite-sized dishes to eat your way through the city.

Spring: September – November

September

Next comes COW: City of Wonder Art + Design Week, with exhibitions, installations, city walks and creative projects taking over all of Hamilton for 10 days across late September and early October.

October – November

If you’re after an interesting evening, Love the Centre’s Progressive Dinner sends guests between five or six mystery eateries without revealing the route in advance.

Round the Bridges fun run is hands-down one of Hamilton’s great community events, bringing thousands of runners and walkers (of all skill levels) through the city’s streets, river paths and bridges, celebrating movement and connection.

Lastly, the Bridge to Bridge event is a waterski classic: a gruelling 82km race down the Waikato River from Cambridge through Hamilton to Taupiri, then back to Hamilton. Their next event is scheduled for November 6 – 8, 2026.

Summer: December

Garden Place becomes the festive heart of town, with NZ’s biggest Christmas tree (literally)!

Add in the annual Christmas Parade, Summer in the City events, carols, markets and family activities, and Hamilton wraps up the year with plenty of community spirit-filled things to do and see.
